I got 5 shots today.
No not shots like alcohol shots but vaccines shots.
I am planning to go to Africa this summer.
Sounds great but it is definitely easier said than done.
First of all, money. If I breakdown the price,
Health Insurance: $200
Accommodation/participation fee: $800
That’s already $2400.
And then here comes the vaccine and pills I gotta take.
Drum roll please…… $800!!!
It costs the same to participate and to be safe(r) (as my friend puts it).
Anyway after I got the shot, I cannot move my arm. I have never felt so uncomfortable with my arms dangling like an orangutan.
I cannot cook and work on my design. I should have definitely book this appointment a lot later after I got all my things finished 😦
Also the risk of actually dying or having severe reaction from these vaccine is very high. Such as the yellow fever vaccine.
1 out of 250,000 people die from this vaccine.
I almost felt like I was going to faint after getting the vaccine. I think I am not so strong mentally after all.
But I think this is one of the first lessons I got in this Tanzania trip.
People in most of Africa have to live with this fear.
Live with the fear of malaria, dengu, yellow fever, rabies…
I worry about small things all the time, but living with a fear that you cannot fight against is very scary…
Maybe this is one of the reason why many people are still suffering from poverty.
There are just too many things at risk.
I am very fortunate for sure.
I think this vaccination was a good lesson in that sense.
